Disinfection

Disinfection means killing of unwanted micro-organisms in water. Every disinfection technique has its specific advantages and its own application area. HYDROCHEM can offer you following types of disinfection systems :-

Ultraviolet (UV) Sterilisers

Ultra Violet Sterilisers are very popular as Terminal Treatment Equipments. In an Ultraviolet Steriliser, raw water enters the unit through the inlet port of the UV Housing. The treated water exits through the outlet port of the UV Housing and is ready for consumption.

Ultraviolet (UV) light is a form of light that is invisible to the human eye. Specific wavelengths, approx. 254 nanometres , are categorized as germicidal – meaning they eliminate bacteria and other pathogens on contact. UV light is an environmentally-friendly, chemical-free, highly-effective way to safeguard water against harmful microorganisms.

Key Benefits:

  • Environmentally Safe - No chemicals required
  • Effective on a wide range of pathogens
  • Low operating costs
  • Low maintenance
  • No bad taste or odor

How Does UV Work?

The germicidal energy of ultraviolet light destroys harmful microorganisms by attacking their genetic core (DNA). This powerful dose of UV light eliminates their ability to reproduce, and the organisms simply die.

Water is purified by running it through a watertight chamber that contains an ultraviolet lamp. As water flows past, microorganisms are exposed to a lethal dose of germicidal UV energy.

Chlorine dioxide disinfection

Chlorine dioxide is used primarily for drinking water preparation and disinfection of piping. ClO2 is used principally as a primary disinfectant for surface waters with odor and taste problems. It is an effective biocide at concentrations as low as 0.1 ppm and over a wide pH range. ClO2 penetrates the bacterial cell wall and reacts with vital amino acids in the cytoplasm of the cell to kill the organisms. The by-product of this reaction is chlorite. Chlorine dioxide disinfects according to the same principle as chlorine, however, as opposed to chlorine, chlorine dioxide has no harmful effects on human health.

Hypochlorite disinfection

A solution of Sodium Hypochlorite is used for chlorination of potable / process water. Hypochlorite disinfection system comprise of a solution preparation tank, chemical dosing ( metering ) pump, suction and discharge piping and low level switch for pump protection.

These systems are specially suited for small water treatment plants, swimming pools etc.

Ozone disinfection

Ozone is used in the pharmaceutical industry, for drinking water preparation, for treatment of process water, for preparation of ultra-pure water and for surface disinfection. Ozone is a very strong oxidation medium, with a remarkably short life span. It consists of oxygen molecules with an extra O-atom, to form O3. When ozone comes in contact with odour, bacteria or viruses the extra O-atom breaks them down directly, by means of oxidation. The third O-atom of the ozone molecules is then lost and only oxygen will remain.
